Scratch Art
What is Scratch Art?
Traditional Scratch-board is a three-layer medium that is made up of a support foundation (either heavy paper or masonite panel) which is then coated with smooth white clay and then a very fine layer of black India ink. This leaves the artist a solid black panel to start with. They then scratch through the black to expose the white clay below creating a white impression on the black board.
We will use a scratch board that has either a gold or a silver metallic finish that is just below the black ink layer.

Project Prep (to be started on Tuesday)
After you have looked at the link above titled, "Scratchboard Basics", you will do the following:
1. Get a practice board ("4 x 5") 2. Draw a basic diagram of the eye (lightly done with a pencil). 3. Scratch out the eye values revealing the lights. (Remember: you already have the dark values, so the pupil of the eye remains black -- Don't scratch!) |
