What is ceramics?
Pottery or hollow clay sculpture fired at high temperatures in a kiln or oven to make them harder and stronger. Types include earthenware, porcelain, stoneware, and terra cotta.

ASSESSMENTS
Assessment is the process of judging in terms of a set of criteria. It is an integral part of expected learning outcomes.
Criteria are expected outcomes and observable evidence of learning. The main purpose of assessment should be to improve teaching and learning and to measure student’s progress. Students will be assessed/critiques by the following criteria:
- Elements & Principles of Design- Effective use of elements and principles of design, carefully thought out and planned, color scheme and use of space used effectively
- Creativity/Originality- Student made several sketches, generated many ideas, tried combinations of ideas, used previous knowledge and problem solving skills
- Effort/Perseverance- Project was completed to the best of students ability
- Craftsmanship/Skill/Consistency- Your art is patiently and skillfully completed. Does not lack finishing touches.
- Group Cooperation/Attitude- Student worked toward group goals, performed a role in the group, showed commitment and cooperation with group members. Student was a participant in all aspects of project they were responsible for.
CLASS GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS
The following is a list of the class guidelines for success and consequences for art/ceramics:
- Be prepared for class – bring your items to class every day.
- Be to class on time.
- Listen to and follow directions – ask questions.
- Respect the people, equipment and furnishings in the art room. Get permission to use other’s materials.
- Use all tools safely and properly.
- Be honest and accountable for your actions.
- Use your time wisely – stay on task and work towards project and assignment objectives.
- Work quietly – use appropriate language and have appropriate conversations.
- Be responsible for work area and tools –CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!
- Have a positive attitude – you CAN do it!
